Klein Curaçao – popular tourist mecca

About 15 nm South East of Curaçao, lies Klein / Little Curaçao. The island can only be reached by boat, and is inhabited of a few people who work for the tourist boats that arrange day trips to the island. Having our own boat, means we are fortunate enough to be able to stay overnight.

We were at the island for two different occasions. First, as we arrived from Venezuelan waters, we spent one night there before arriving at the main island to check in. We were there with our buddy boat, Ikaria.

The light house does not look operational, but it actually is. It gives out its beacon, but automatically. Clearly there are no longer people living at the facilities.

Klein Curacao is also well known for its wreck, with sits on the windward side of the island. It was a freight ship that run aground in the 80’s, and luckily no one was injured.

There are a total of four wrecks sitting close to each other on the island. It was somewhat saddening to see these wrecks side by side of each other.

The second time we visited the island, was a couple of weeks later, when we had Bruse’s son Christopher and his girlfriend Lorena, visiting.

Our second time on Klein Curacao, this time with Christopher and Lorena visiting from Norway 😍

We then spent a total of three nights there, which is max of what is allowed. We enjoyed the turquoise clear waters, and fished, snorkeled and dived right off the boat. A dream anchorage! Particularly after 15:30, when all of the tourist boats leave 😄

The last morning at the anchorage, the coast guard helicopter arrived, and we were called over channel 16 as it circled around us. It turned out that on board was a South African coast guard employee who knew Herbie, the head of the coast guard we met at Ascension Island. She took some really cool pictures of Noxoma from the helicopter 🤩 And, yet again, we were proven that the world in deed is small….
