Passage: Walvis Bay – St. Helena island

St. Helena island is truly a natural phenomenon. After nine days of sailing 1,200 nautical miles in areas with 5.000 meters depth, out of the sea rises a volcanic island.

We didn’t see any ships on the AIS for the past four days before arriving, so it definitely feels remote here. The island is a former British colony, and has a rich history with several nations fighting over it.

The island is a popular stop en route from South Africa to the Caribbean, as it gives sailors a good rest after getting free from the sometimes rather harsh South Easterly winds around the cape.

We had some strong winds the first two days out of Namibia, and after that, we experienced the pleasant trade winds most of the way.
