Designing our Oxley sail

As we are rigging Noxoma, there are many choices we have to make in terms of what kind of sails we would like. Bruse has researched different choices for a substitute for a spinnaker for quite some time.

He has considered both the Parasailor and Oxley sails, and after much research, we decided to go for the Oxley Levante sail.

Then we had to figure out which size would suit our boat the best. We got a lot of different responses – from the manufacturer, the boat builder and also from different sailing forums online. Lastly, we got some serious good advise from Paul Badenhorst who trades these sails, which finally made us certain about our decision.

Based on his advise, we decided to go for a 20.5 square meter size, after we had been advised on everything from a 18.5 to a 23.5 square meter sail. It is not too large for the two of us to handle, and it is still large enough for our boat to get up to a good speed, while still being safe.

Now we have to decide on the design. Carine has made the following sketches, which we are considering.

As you can see, we like a greyish look… Although the white logo looks really cool, we are not sure we are actually allowed to get a white logo. It might need to get digitally printed, and we are not sure about the durability of it. So, we checked with the manufacturer about our design options.

We quickly found out that the only option for getting our logo on the sail, is to print it on a white sail. We can choose whichever color logo we want, though. So, it seems like Carine has to go back to the design board. So, based on this, we have some new designs to consider:

Then we decided it looks better without the writing in the logo, and just the icon. So far, the strongest candidate is this one:

It has a dark gray top, red wing and seams, and white bottom. The logo is a charcoal variant, at 80% of a total black color.

And, this is the final design we received back from the Oxley team:
